What are stress systems? Stress systems are physiological and psychological mechanisms that are activated in response to situations that we perceive as threatening or challenging. This triggers a “fight or flight” response in which the body prepares to deal with the threat. The sympathetic system increases heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing, and releases hormones such as adrenaline and norepinephrine to provide additional energy to the body.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis: The Hormonal Response to Stress The HPA axis is another key part of our stress system. When the brain perceives a threat, the hypothalamus releases a hormone called corticotropin (CRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). In turn, ACTH travels to the adrenal glands, located above the kidneys, and stimulates the release of cortisol, known as the stress hormone. Cortisol helps regulate metabolism, immune system, and energy levels in response to stress.

Impact of chronic stress on the body and mind: While stress systems are designed to be beneficial in short-term situations, chronic stress can have a negative impact on our health. Excess cortisol and continued activation of the stress system can contribute to the development of health problems such as heart disease, sleep disorders, digestive problems, and mental disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Strategies to manage stress effectively

  1. Identify and address sources of stress: Identifying the underlying causes of stress and taking steps to address them is essential. This may involve setting healthy boundaries, prioritizing tasks and activities, and seeking emotional support when needed.
  2. Practice relaxation techniques: Deep relaxation, meditation, deep breathing and yoga are effective techniques for reducing stress levels and promoting mental and physical well-being.
  3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: A balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep are essential for managing stress. These activities promote the release of endorphins, hormones that improve mood, and help reduce stress levels.
  4. Seek social support: Sharing your worries and experiences with friends, family, or health professionals can provide invaluable support and help you gain different perspectives and strategies for managing stress.
