First confirmed case in Mexico of the new strain of COVID

The new coronavirus variant arrived in Mexico, specifically Tamaulipas. A 56-year-old man who arrived from Europe to Mexico tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 type B117. At press time, he is intubated in a private hospital in Matamoros.

Through a statement it was reported that this is a 56-year-old man who arrived in Matamoros, from Mexico City, being confirmed with Covid-19 and in accordance with the regulations, the federation was requested to process him. of the sample to rule out the carriage of strains not known in the country. 

The test results were positive for the new variant of SARS-CoV-2, which first appeared in the United Kingdom in mid-September, which has become the predominant variant in that country.

At the daily press conference, the general director of Epidemiology of Mexico, José Luis Alomía Zegarra, presented the positive case for the B117 strain.

El patient traveled from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Mexico City on December 28. The next day, she left the Mexican capital for Matamoros, Tamaulipas, on an Aeroméxico flight. Arriving at the border, according to the protocol of the company where he works, they performed a PCR test on him and checked him into a hotel.

The Ministry of Health of Tamaulipas intervened in the case on December 31, when he took a second sample, which was sent to the Institute for Epidemiological Diagnostics and Reference (InDRE) for the detection of the type of coronavirus variant.

El patient was admitted to a private hospital due to low oxygenation, 84 percent, on January 4. The doctors determined outpatient treatment. The man showed an improvement in his health during the following days.

However, on Friday, January 8, he returned to the hospital with breathing problems that led to intubation until Sunday night. On Sunday at noon, the InDRE confirmed that the contagion was due to the new variant, also known as English.

The Federation and the state government They develop a protocol to monitor the health of the 45 passengers who shared the flight with the positive. At the moment, none have tested positive for coronavirus; a couple had symptoms but the test result was negative and 31 more are asymptomatic negative.

“They are still looking for 12 more people; This is in charge of the areas of the federal entity to be able to verify their health status,” Alomía Zegarra pointed out in the report of the follow-up to the case.

Tamaulipas Health maintains health surveillance of travelers and flight crew. In addition, the State Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Coepris) implemented a protocol for the control of air borders.
